A Neighborhood Steeped in History

Originally known as Marburg, Lawndale's early industrial area centered around the Kensington & Oxford Turnpike (now Rising Sun Avenue) and Benner, Colgate, and Comly streets. This area housed businesses like the Marburg Bottling Company and a slaughterhouse, while the more residential end was near the intersection of Rising Sun Avenue and Levick Street. The oldest non-farming homes in Lawndale are located on Levick Street, with many historic structures still standing, such as what is now Campbell’s Funeral Home, formerly Paul Mahle’s General Store.

The Lawndale name emerged when the Philadelphia, Newtown & New York Railroad established a station in the area in the 1890s. This station, which has seen various iterations over the years, is now an active SEPTA stop, facilitating daily commutes for hundreds of residents. Interestingly, while the physical station is located in Montgomery County/Cheltenham Township, it primarily serves the northern part of Lawndale.

Diverse Residential and Architectural Styles

Lawndale boasts a variety of residential buildings, from row houses and twins to large estate-type homes. The community developed in three main stages: pre-1920s, 1920–1930, and 1950–1960, with fewer than 40 homes built since the 1970s. This mix of housing styles contributes to Lawndale's charm and desirability, making it one of Philadelphia’s hidden gems.

Community and Education

Lawndale is home to a rich array of religious institutions, including no less than 12 Protestant churches and two Catholic parishes: St. William's Parish and Presentation BVM Parish. The area also houses Presentation BVM School, which remains after the closure of St. William School in 2012. Although the former Lawndale Elementary School was closed in the 1980s, it now operates as Cedar Grove Christian Academy.

For public education, the nearest schools serving Lawndale residents are Ben Franklin Elementary and Creighton Elementary in nearby Crescentville, with local high school students attending Northeast High School or Samuel Fels High School. Catholic high school students have various options, though Cardinal Dougherty in Olney was a popular choice until its closure in 2009.

Recreation and Services

The Lawncrest Recreation Center, Lawncrest Library, and Engine 64 Fire House serve both Lawndale and Crescentville communities, providing essential services and recreational opportunities. These facilities, located on Rising Sun Avenue between Lardner and Comly streets, are vital community hubs.

Thriving Business District

Lawndale’s main business district stretches from Robbins to Longshore Avenue, featuring over 200 stores. The neighborhood, bounded by Comly Street to the south, SEPTA/CSX Transportation to the west, Longshore/Tyson Avenue to the north, and Pennway Avenue to the east, hosts over 500 businesses. The Naval Supply Depot, employing over 5,000 civilian and military workers, is one of the largest employers in the area.
